Board of Governors Vacancies

Thursday, 8 February, 2018 - 14:15

Dear Members,

I'm writing to you to announce that due to recent elections to the National Executive Committee, there are three vacancies on the Board of Governors.

The Board is intended to house nine Governors who contribute to the party. Ideally a range of voices, including seasoned pirates and those with a fresh view, are very valuable to adding a guidance and experience to the party, amending the constitution or providing oversight. If you ever wanted to help keep the Pirate Party on track, you should consider volunteering yourself at the election.

Member's Update - Elections and Incumbents

Sunday, 29 May, 2016 - 22:00

Hello fellow Pirates,

We have some announcements to make!

If you're looking for some fresh content, our very own Danfox [https://www.pirateparty.org.uk/danfox-davies ] has posted an interesting long-read magazine piece on wars, friendship, and conscience [https://www.pirateparty.org.uk/party-magazine/new-world-example ].

Support us - put more Pirates into the European Parliament

The Pirate Party is asking for donations to help fund its EU Parliamentary election run and to keep the discussion on digital rights, civil liberties, surveillance and all the other issues we talk about on the agenda.  We are hoping to raise £5,000 to cover the cost of standing candidates, but elections are expensive, so the more we can raise, the more we cad do for the EU elections and later in the year.

Seeking Ruby Developers!

We may have a new website, but that is just the start of our plans to open up politics.  In association with Lancaster University, we want to take the lessons we learnt in our "Policy Alpha" project which ran on reddit, twitter and elsewhere, and formed our manifesto in 2012, and take it to the next step: Policy Beta.

About Policy Beta

Policy Beta is our next big IT project.  We want to create a digital platform for citizens to network, generate ideas, debate issues, and vote on the policies that we will adopt.  It's going to be our way of deciding the Party's direction and with that, the pressure we put on government.  Policy Beta will do what we did manually in Policy Alpha back in 2011/12 and much more. It will be a custom fit, open source platform for crowdsourcing public policy.

But its not just for us: As a way of crowdsourcing ideas, Policy Beta will deal with the lack of participation in the way political parties and, indeed, modern democracies work when it comes to gathering ideas.  It will be an open source platform, which means anyone will be able to make use of it, extend it or help us to improve it.

We'd like you to join us and our partners at Lancaster University to get this project across the line.  Right now we are looking for developers, but as with our other large IT projects, there will be lots of stuff you can get involved with!

Hi, I'm Gefion! I'm a Pirate living in Oxford and looking forward to getting involved with the Pirate Party in the UK.  I've been a member of the UK party since 2011, but haven't really had the chance to properly get involved yet (although I'm representing the Party for the International team in Paris this week!).  That's because I've been busy helping the Pirate cause in Germany.  I've been very involved with the PiratenPartei and am currently a member of the national board.  I'm looking for a change.

My term on the German Pirate Party board expires in June, and I feel that I've done all I can in Germany for now.  So its time for a new challenge that lets me make the most of my skills and lets me do the things I'm interested in.

For the last four years I've achieved a lot with the PiratenPartei. I've built their news service, run their press team, been involved with their election campaigns and helped with the organisation. Along the way, I've also done some work for the PPI, and created the international pirate news portal "Pirate Times". Its been hard, but I've learned a lot. Sometimes how things should be done, sometimes how they shouldn't! I'm hoping to bring some of that experience and my skills, as well as a pair of fresh eyes and an extra pair of hands to the Pirate Party in the UK.

Volunteers! Candidates need you

Editor's picture

Over the next few days I shall be attempting to get a handle of what is required of myself to best serve our candidates, whom I encourage to contact me with regards to what volunteer resources they think they require. Likewise, I will contact you and make sure that you are hopefully well furnished in the volunteer department.

As we are all aware candidates are being readied to stand in their constituencies and will certainly need our help, if you are willing and able to help them in a volunteer capacity, it would be a great help to know your locations. If helping out candidates sounds like something you can do, please get in touch with me, if you would like to help but fear the candidate you wish to support lives too far away we will endeavour to pair you up with a local volunteer willing to offer some over night accommodation.
