Mike Pompeo, the newly-confirmed director of the United States Central Intelligence Agency, has pledged to "aggressively seek to ensure we have the most effective programs for identifying insider threats" in a chilling statement of intent to US senators.
Pompeo's statement is a sign that the new director intends to pursue the same anti-leaks policies that discourage whistleblowing as were enforced by the previous administration under President Obama.
Pirate Party Whistleblowing Spokesperson Rebecca Sentance said:
"The special relationship we have with the United States has continually been put under strain with the Obama administration killing privacy, and it appears that those now being appointed under President Trump are looking to build on and expand this bad legacy.
"As Pirates, we believe that in a functioning democracy it is absolutely crucial for power to be held to account. For this we need whistle-blowers - but their disclosures often put them in an extremely vulnerable position as governments and corporations seek to make an example of them, to discourage further revelations.
"The comments made by both Pompeo and Trump emphasise this - both speaking strongly against Snowden, Manning and other prospective whistle-blowers. Given the comments made by groups such as the CIA when seeking to expand digital surveillance we would like to ask them: 'If you've nothing to hide, then you've nothing to fear from whistle-blowers - so what are you hiding?'
"As digital rights continue to be weakened, we know that the global Pirate movement will continue to fight for our civil liberties everywhere, both abroad and at home - it is clear that the movement is now needed more than ever."
About Pirate Party UK
The Pirate Party in the UK is a fledgling political party. It has fielded a few candidates in European and National elections, but like most small parties it is significantly constrained by the UK electoral system. Despite this, the Pirate Party now has a representative in local government and is looking to build support from the grassroots.
