How we work

Pirate Party UK is a democratic party built upon grassroots support and the work of volunteers. As such we rely on the support and input of our members. All members have the right to elect those who administrate the party, vote on policy and constitutional amendments, and also ratify election candidates.   Ideas, promotional materials, policies, and projects often come directly from the members themselves, and you are encouraged to contribute in any way you can.   Operating a political party takes a lot of hard work, so we have elected administrators who handle the running of the party. Below is a brief overview of our structure, for more information about these bodies, click the links in the navigation bar.

The Constitution

The Constitution governs what we do and how we do it. It is amended from time to time, but the document provides a stable core for the actions of the party.

The National Executive Committee (NEC)

The NEC is responsible for the day-to-day running and legal administration of the party. It consists of the Party Leader, Deputy Leader, Nominating Officer, Treasurer, and Party Secretary. They are elected by members no less frequently than every 2 years.

The Board of Governors

The Board are a group of 9 elected Governors who are responsible for the party’s constitution, and other currently undefined governance responsibilities.

We are currently setting up local/regional branches to support & co-ordinate campaigns & elections at the relevant levels. If you are interested in joining or setting up a branch, please email [email protected] for info.

Press Office

The Press Office is responsible for writing press releases, and handling media requests for interviews and statements. If you see an article about us, the Press Office is probably responsible.

IT Team

The IT team are responsible for maintaining the parties IT infrastructure. While mainly working behind the scenes, if you have a problem with a party system such as the website, this is the team who will be on the case.
