Candidates: NEC Elections 2019

Standing for: Leader

Candidate Statement:

Fellow Pirates, I seek your support in being re-elected as Party Leader. The last few years have been rough, facing two general elections in the space of two years. Alongside running in that snap GE, an enormous effort for a party of our size and funding at the time, we also started revisiting our outdated policies, resulting in our 2017 manifesto and unveiled a new-look website that launched a couple of months ago. If re-elected, I would continue to work with our NEC to modernise our web infrastructure to better support the party in the coming years, as well as spending the next year reviewing and overhauling our policy platform, trimming the fat where policies don't fit with our principles, and starting to do the research needed to provide evidence to support our key policies and principles.

Although the Leader is responsible for the strategic direction and general organisation of the party, none of us on the NEC can undertake this burden alone. If you have the technical experience and patience to work with us on our new platform, or you like to take a keen eye to policy research, we could really use your support as a volunteer. Please do get in touch with us once the elections are over and offer your services

Candidate Statement:

My name is Jason, and I have been a member of the Pirate Party UK for a number of years. I have previously held the position of Press Officer, and went on to join the NEC as Nominations Officer, a position I have held a number of times. In this day and age, I find myself less and less enthused by the mainstream political parties and their pledges and manifestos. For a number of years the Pirate Party UK has been the only option for me, and I've been with the party through good times and bad. I have seen first-hand what a difference a good Leader can make, and believe that I can be a good Leader for the party.

Some of the key qualities of a good Leader for me are: being a good communicator, serving with integrity, being accountable, showing humility, having confidence, and sharing the vision. I try to embody these points in who I am every day: I take pride in ensuring that I do equal amounts of speaking and listening. I ensure that I do the right thing even if nobody is watching. I am accountable for the decisions that I make, and I am not afraid to hold my hand up and take the blame if I make the wrong call, as long as I made the call for the right reasons to serve the good purpose.

We as a country are going through hard-times. To name just a few of the most prominent problems, we have Brexit, which is the direct result of decisions made by the Conservative Party leadership wanting to stop their party from disintegrating into various fractures. We've had a decade of austerity and cuts to public service funding, imposed by a Conservative Party Government who had the audacity to say "Austerity had ended". We've had not one but TWO early General Elections, and frankly who knows what is next in a long line of problems.

We need a National Executive Committee that is forward-facing, ready for the challenge of whatever comes next. And I want to show you that we *CAN* do well as a party, if we have the vision, the motive and the drive to succeed as a team.
