Pirate Party UK Appoints New (Old) Deputy Treasurer

The fools! They’ve trusted me with all the money!

The newly elected NEC is currently strategising for 2018 and the up coming local elections – but while they do that, I’m now sitting in my nice little back office, counting pieces of eight as the new Deputy Treasurer. Well, maybe not "new" as I've been in the party a while now... but you ge the picture.

Here are some things you might not know about our finances:

  1. We are the most affordable political party in the UK to join, with membership as low as £3.
  2. We are the first British political party to accept Bitcoin.
  3. We have a great Deputy Treasurer.

Fascinating right?

So what do we do in the Treasury department? Well, mostly it’s looking to budget, or permit a budget but soon we’ll have some nice upgrades to the payment system, which should allow us to accept bitcoin and a few other things as payment for memberships within an automated system. Currently some things need to be processed manually, and that can take a little while.

Aside things like that, we have to submit regular accounts to the electoral commission, and update them whenever there is a change to our party’s officers.

So there is quite a lot of back office party stuff to do but it pays off. Standing as an independent candidate can lose the wider message and rarely sees success – but with a functioning political party, the burden of paperwork and administration… and having to find a budget is placed more on the central party (primarily Treasur[er/y]) which allows the candidates to be free to be just that, candidates.

Hopefully this is somewhere I can be most useful, supporting the next generation, without sucking up too much of the attention.
